About us

whynotchemeng is a schools and careers initiative devised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) to promote the diverse range of careers in chemical, biochemical and process engineering to school students aged 14-18.

The campaign was launched in 2001 to reverse the decline in applications and intake to UK chemical engineering degree courses and was built around three core activities:

    • www.whynotchemeng.com: containing everything a school student would need to know about chemical, biochemical and process engineering.
    • careers information and resources: relevant classroom resources, activities, literature and posters for secondary schools.
    • local speaker network: IChemE members in the UK and Ireland offer their time and expertise to visit schools and discuss chemical engineering career opportunities.

whynotchemeng has contributed to a substantial increase in both applications and intake to chemical engineering degree courses. Despite this, there is a perceived lack of understanding of the industries and sectors that employ (and can take advantage of) chemical engineering graduates, leaving many unaware of the full range of employment opportunities on offer.

whynotchemeng aims to provide students (and their parents and teachers) with the information they need to make an informed decision. This website contains study information, job roles, case studies, links to universities and employers and much more.
